[ Work in Progress ] Ambilight Plant Box

I have a plant who deserves a cool new box to be put in. So i am going to show you how to make a cool ambilight plant box.

Get These Materials

  • Triplex wood 3mm x2
  • Plexiglas 4.4mm x1
  • Garden tarp [1m]
  • Arduino Uno
  • Jumpwires Male/Female x10
  • long wires x4
  • short wires x4
  • 10 mm Colored led's x4
  • Glue for wood
  • Superglue

Make a Top Box

What we are going to do is make our first box. That is also the box where the plant is going to stay. For convenience sake, i have included my SVG-file from makercase.com. This file can easily be opened in adobe illustrator or any vector editing program.

If you want to make your own variation on this design i suggest you download my file for the measurments. Go to makercase.com and import this file so you can adjust it to get the result you are looking for.

  • The lines of your product need to be 0.028MM and 0,0,255 (red). Other wise it ain't cutting anything.
  • When you have made a design it's time to go to the lasercutter.
  • When you are done you can use a woodglue to attach alle the parts together.

Make a Middle Box

What we are going to do is make our second box. That is also the box where the lights are going to stay. For convenience sake, i have included my SVG-file from makercase.com. This file can easily be opened in adobe illustrator or any vector editing program.

If you want to make your own variation on this design i suggest you download my file for the measurements. Go to makercase.com and import this file so you can adjust it to get the result you are looking for.

  • When you have made a design it's time to go to the lasercutter.
  • When you are done you can use superglue to attach all the parts together.

Make a Bottom Box

What we are going to do is make our final box. That is also the box where the Arduino and circuitry are going to stay.

  • When you have made a design it's time to go to the laser cutter.
  • When you are done you can use a little wood glue to attach all the parts together.
  • Leave atleast one side open for all the circuitry to be placed in.

Getting Started With the Arduino Wiring

The ports on we are going to use are 6,9,10 and 11. First, we put the ground in the breadboard place it in minus. Then place the cable for pin 6 in the plus and get a resistor placed it in front of the cable.

we are going to put the 10mm led's together with the male/female cables. After that, you put the cables in the breadboard and connect the plus with the rest of the pins. The ground can be connected as well with the cables in one horizontal line.

* Where the led's are in the schematic you place the male and female cables and put the led's in them.

Code the Slow Lights

My code is a variation of a basic template in the arduino code editor, the fade example code. I will include this file so if it's your first time coding something you can look at it.

Glue the top box with the side where there are no holes. The holes are needed for the lights that are going to fade. Thanks to your code that is. After that put the Arduino in the bottom box and get the led's out of the holes there. Put it in the holes of the middlebox. After that glue the middle to the bottom box. Put some garden tarp in the plant box on top for you know the plant to be placed in.

Test it by putting some voltage through it and voila your own Ambilight planter box.

Optional Step - 3D Print Your Logo/Initials

Use my file as a base model for your optional 3D-design. i made this in thinkercad.com.

After a quick tutorial you can make your own designs. Be warned if you want to make small and quick things, make them flat and light (2mm height). It will save you money trust me on this. Anything else go nuts :D

Reflection

Only after I made this project. I saw a few flaws in my product, like the holes instead of 15mm the need to be 10mm. So the led's don't get stuck inside the box. Also, the plant box doesn't need to be glued on top of the middlebox, cause they can be separate things.

Besides does points that can be changed I think this is a fun little project if you are new to the Arduino. And want something to show off to friends and family.
