When my daughter received a massive LEGO collection—including my childhood bricks—it was clear we needed a solid storage solution.

The IKEA Trofast system is a popular choice, but I wanted to take it further. I routed an additional level into the frame to fit extra 5 cm trays, maximizing storage capacity.

On top of that, I integrated existing 3D-printed upgrades from Printables and Thingiverse for Trofast, including backstops to prevent trays from sliding through, divider walls, sorting boxes, and a Gridfinity system for special parts.

Unlike other setups, this project combines multiple enhancements into one optimized, easy-to-use LEGO storage solution. Best of all, all 3D-printable parts are freely available, making it easy for anyone to replicate!

Supplies

IKEA TROFAST Frame (93×52 cm, pine white stain) – 1x

IKEA TROFAST Boxes:

Small (42×30×5 cm, turquoise)6x

Medium (42×30×10 cm, green & white)3x each

Router & Bit (for adding an extra tray level)

Screws & Drill (for securing modifications)

3D-Printed Parts:

• Backstops to prevent trays from sliding through

• Divider walls for trays

• Sorting boxes for LEGO parts

• Gridfinity system for specialized storage

Sandpaper or File (for finishing routed edges)

Before assembling the TROFAST frame, use a router to add an additional 5 cm level for the trays. This modification allows you to fit extra trays into the frame, increasing the storage capacity. Be sure to sand down the edges of the routed areas to smooth out any rough spots before moving on to assembly.

Assemble your TROFAST frame and insert the trays as instructed by IKEA. Now, you add one additional level, utilizing the additional routed level for better organization. This will provide you with more room for the LEGO pieces! Using 6 of the 5 cm high trays with many compartments makes separating different LEGO bricks easy from the beginning. Keep the height of the used tray at 5 cm and 10 cm to allow for maximum amount of levels and thus sorting.

Print out the backstops, divider walls, and sorting boxes available on Printables or Thingiverse. After printing, place these 3D-printed parts into the trays to divide and organize the LEGO pieces.

You can also use a Gridfinity system for special LEGO parts. Fix the boxes and the Gridfinity base with power strips or double adhesive tape. f

Finally, enjoy the perfect storage solution to keep everything neat and easily accessible!
