" I Have the Power" Castle Grayskull Cake

My son is obsessed with He-man! He recently saw photos from our wedding and one really stood out to him. We had a Castle Grayskull cake for our grooms cake. Well you guessed it, he just had to have one for his birthday!  So I said to my self  "self, you could totally make him one". The one for our wedding was professionally made, not by me. This was my first go around with fondant and being creative and artistic and well it's not too shabby! I am proud of my self for completing his cake however I still need more work on my fondant skills.

Where I Began

  • So I borrowed a castle cake pan from a friend and used a rainbow chip cake mix from walmart for the cakes. I baked a cake in the castle cake pan and then one in a large cookie sheet. So that way my castle could sit atop some castle grounds.
  • Then I whipped up a batch of rice krispys so that I could mold a skull for the door way and a large sword because really He-man is nothing without his sword.
  • Things were starting to take shape

I used a butter cream icing and fondant recipe from the Wilton website
Butter cream icing
http://www.wilton.com/recipe/Buttercream-Icing However where they use vanilla extract I used half a teaspoon almond extract and half a teaspoon coconut extract. You will taste less powdered sugar and it's just better in my opinion.

  • Then I just followed all the directions and started covering up and arranging my cakes.

Lastly I used some black food coloring and a brush and just started accenting where I thought necessary. Highlighting a few areas here and there.
I also took the left over icing and put it in a zip lock bag and threw in some green and black food coloring til I got a nice swampy color. Then cut a hole in one corner and piped it around the castle and the rocks for a little grass and texture.
I also added He-man, Teela, and Skeletor to the top of the cake. Which we just happened to have among my husbands toy collection.
Like I said I am no professional, but I don't think it turned out too bad for a first go around. At least the birthday boy thinks its awesome and that's all that matters!
I will be a little sad tomorrow when we hack into it considering it took me all day to do:(
