"The flashlight made with recycled material (parts from the old bike) and wood !"

Supplies

(You can change the materials depending on what you are available)

Materials:

  • 1 x Tube
  • 1 x Switch
  • Wood Piece (for the led)
  • PVC tape
  • 3 x LED lights
  • Lense
  • Battery cage
  • Shrinking tube
  • Ruler
  • (Wood Glue)
  • Polygon foam+Utillity knife
  • Small Nails
  • Cables
  • Epoxy glue

Required Tools:

  • Soldering station
  • Saw (to cut the tube)
  • Sandpaper/ sander (I used the belt sander)
  • Pillar drill (for drilling the hole for the switch and the nails)

Sketch of the Product

This is a sketch of my product, to give you an idea what my product will look like.

Cut the Tube

8.35.21.png

Cut the tube into the length you want.

I used a Hack saw (because my material is metal, aluminum, is).

*Make sure it is long enough for the battery cage and the cables to store.

Sand the Tube

3.53.06.png

Sand the ends of the tube to the level of the boards (lid, the boards that will hold the LEDs) you will glue on later can nicely fit.

*I used a belt sander, but as long as the boards will attach the surface nicely is fine by hand too.

(Optional) Cover the Tube

3.57.33.png

I covered my tube with PVC tape because the original color wasn't my type.

  1. Measure the length of the tube you cut and the width (circumference)
  2. Draw the size on the back of the PVC tape
  3. Cover the tube

*I actually did the drilling of the hole for the switch first, then covered it but it is hard to get the edges (around where the switch pop out) clean, so I think it will be better if you covered it first then drill for the switch

Dill Hole for the Switch

3.53.42.png

Drill a hole that has a diameter/size as will allow the switch to fit.

I used the pillar here.

*Mark the place you will drill before drilling

Cut the Lid + the Board That Will Hold the LEDs

3.54.37.png

I measured the diameter of my tube then used the laser cutter to cut it. The MDF board is 5mm, but I want 10mm, and since the laser cutter, I used can only cut board no more than 5mm, I made 2.

(Optional) Glue the 2 Pieces of the Lid

3.56.42.png

To make 2 5mm thick boards together, I used wood glue.

Drill Holes for the LEDs

3.55.44.png

The width of your hole depends on the width of your LED.

*I used a pillar drill here.

Solder the Cables + Put on Shrinking Tubes

3.55.59.png

Solder the cables. The picture above is the circuit diagram. If you don't understand... Google is your friend! 🤣

Glue the Cables to the Board That Holds the LEDs

3.59.17.png

Have some glue applied at the side which you won't see from outside to keep the flashlight pretty. 😉

I used epoxy glue.

Drill Holes for Nails + for Attaching the Battery Cage

4.00.41.png

The lid will close because there are small nails inserted into the lid and there are magnets glued inside the tube.

*2nd pic is only to show you the hole drilled, the black thing is the battery cage which we'll do in the next step.

Attaching Battery Cage

3.58.45.png

Screw the nails between the spring of the battery cage. You can shift the spring to make this process easier.

*If there isn't a hole on the battery cage you can attach it in a different way, I believe there won't be a large inpact

Screw Small Nails

8.33.36.png

Screw the small nails into the holes

*If it doesn't stay well add some glue in the hole to help

Attach the Switch

4.02.57.png

I cut a piece of polygon foam so the switch will stay where I wanted it to be.

Glue the Board That Holds the LEDs

4.00.13.png

Glue the board that holds the LEDs to the tube.

**I used tape to help to hold the board while it is drying. Careful not to get glue on the tape because we don't want that later.

*I used epoxy glue.

*I have the board glued inside the tube.

(While Waiting) Glue Magnet

4.04.05.png

While waiting for the front of the flashlight to dry, we can work on the back. Glue one magnet inside the tube.

**The location of the magnets should correspond to the nails

*I used epoxy glue

*I choose long shaped magnet because I think it will attach better to the tube

*I used a pencil to hold the cables preventing the glue from getting the glue, however, it still got some on it...

(Dried) Glue the Other Magnet

4.05.28.png

Glue the other magnet on when the 1st when is dried.

*Grey stuff on the cable is nothing important it's just glue I got on it accidently.

Glue Lens

9.10.19.png

Glue the lens.

Finished,Thank You!!
