Like many others, my Pinterest feed has been flooded with puff flowers recently. I never thought to do anything with them, however I realized that they are a fun way to upgrade the typical vest and add a bit of color! In this tutorial I will show you how to crochet a vest using puff flowers. So grab your hook and let's get crocheting!

Take your 3.75 mm crochet hook and your off white yarn

Round 1: Create a magic ring with 12 sc inside

Switch to colored yarn

Round 2: Insert hook into any st. Pull colored yarn through and ch 3.

Yarn over and insert hook into the same st. Pull yarn through.

Yarn over and insert hook into the same st. Pull yarn through.

Yarn over and insert hook into the next st. Pull yarn through.

Yarn over and insert hook into the same st. Pull yarn through.

Yarn over and insert hook into the same st. Pull yarn through.

Now you should have 11 loops on your hook.

Yarn over and pull through all of the loops. Ch 2 and slp st into the next st.

Now you have completed one petal! Only 5 more to go.

Repeat Round 2 until you have 6 petals. After you have slp st into the next st, ch 1 and tie off.

Hooray! You've finished one flower! In order to complete a vest, we will need 163 flowers, which sounds like a lot!

However as you have seen, these flowers are super quick and easy to make.

Repeat Rounds 1 and 2 until you have:

27 Pink Flowers | 27 Orange Flowers | 28 Yellow Flowers | 26 Green Flowers | 28 Blue Flowers | 27 Purple Flowers

or a total of 163 flowers.

Materials for this section: large yarn needle or crochet hook | colored yarn

Congrats on completing 163 flowers! Give yourself a pat on the back. Now we can move onto the sewing part.

Begin by setting up your flowers in the pattern shown above. Feel free to set up the color combinations any way you'd like.

Sew or slp st the flowers in place. Take two flowers and place them right sides together. Only sew two petals together.

Take a third flower and set it below the other two. Reference photo (7). Sew the flower in place following the natural ridges of the petals.

Once you have completed the trios of flowers, sew them together to form rows. Reference photo (1 + 11)

Sew the rows together to finish the front panel.

Sewing the Flowers - Back Panel

IMG_20220628_170333113.jpg

Materials for this section: large yarn needle or crochet hook | colored yarn

The back panel is more or less the same as the front panel, so you're already halfway there.

Layout the flowers as shown in the picture above. Sew the flowers in trios. Then stitch the trios to form rows. Sew the rows together to complete the back panel.

Assemble Panels

Now that the front panel and back panel have been finished, we can assemble the vest.

Lay the panels right side up adjacent to each other. Follow the petals ridges and sew 4 rows together.

(Reference photo) Cut and tie off.

Flip the panels right sides facing each other and sew the other side seam. Remember to only sew 4 rows. Cut and tie off.

Sew the shoulder seams following the petals' curves.

Waistband Ribbing

IMG_20220711_095744853.jpg

Materials for the section: off-white yarn | 3.75 mm crochet hook

First we will be starting off with the waistband ribbing.

Round 1: ch 11

Round 2: hdc in each st starting with the second ch from the hook

Round 3: ch 1 and turn, hdc in each st

Repeat Round 3 until the waistband fits around your waist comfortably.

Once you have reached your desired length, take the two ends of the waistband and slp st right sides together.

Cut and tie off.

I used pins to secure the waistband in place while I was sewing. However this is optional.

Make sure that the middle of the waistband aligns with the middle of the vest.

Stitch the waistband to the bottom of the flower vest, gathering the flowers slightly as you sew. Cut and tie off.

Sleeve Ribbing

IMG_20220711_161019559.jpg
IMG_20220712_103006764.jpg

Next we will be doing the sleeve ribbing.

Round 1: Ch 8

Round 2: Sc in each st starting with the second ch from the hook

Round 3: Slp st into the shoulder seam (facing out) of the flower vest. slp st into the next st of the flower and ch 1

Round 4: Turn your work and sc in each st of the ribbing, ch 1

Round 5: Turn your work and sc in each st of the ribbing. Slp st twice into the flower adjacent to the ribbing

Do not slp st into the same st.

Repeat Round 4 and 5 until you have returned to the shoulder seam.

Slp st the ends of the ribbing right sides together. Cut and tie off.

Repeat this for the other sleeve

Neckline Ribbing

IMG_20220712_114650347.jpg
IMG_20220712_123004726.jpg

Finally we will complete the neckline ribbing. This is exactly like the sleeve ribbing but with less stitches.

Round 1: Ch 6

Round 2: Starting with the second ch from the hook, sc in each st

Round 3: Slp st into the shoulder seam facing into the flower vest. Slp st into the next st and ch 1

Round 4: Turn your work and sc in each st of the ribbing, ch 1

Round 5: Turn your work and sc in each st of the ribbing. Slp st twice into the flower adjacent to the ribbing

Repeat Round 4 and 5 until you have returned to the beginning of the ribbing.

Slp st the ribbing ends right sides together. Cut and tie off.
